For dads and partners

Here is what you can actually do.

You may not be able to (breast)feed the baby, but there's still so much that you can do. The work counts, and is part of the bonding.

Start with tonight

How it works

Nobody has to ask you.

Fourth reads the day and puts one thing in front of you. Claim it and the instructions come with it, so you are not searching at 2am or waking her to check. When it is done, she sees it. She never had to work out what was needed, decide who would do it, ask you, or remember to follow up.

Washing pump parts

  1. Rinse every part in cool water first. Hot water sets the milk fat.
  2. Wash in a bowl kept only for pump parts, not the sink basin.
  3. Air dry on a clean towel. Skip the dish rack.

Tonight

Six things that move the needle

None of these require you to be a natural. They require you to pick them up before she has to ask.

01

Take the 2am feed

One uninterrupted four-hour stretch does more for her recovery than anything else in the house. If she is nursing, you do the bottle or you do the change and the resettle.

02

Log it

Every feed, change, and nap you record is one less thing she is holding in her head at 4am. That pregnancy brain? It doesn't go away for a while.

03

Watch her numbers

Blood pressure and bleeding are the two things that can turn serious quickly, and she is too tired to be objective about herself. You can be the one who notices and makes the call.

04

Own the phone calls

Insurance, the pediatrician’s scheduling line, the lactation referral, the bill that looks wrong. Take the entire administrative layer off her plate.

05

Feed her, properly

Getting enough protein and iron in these early weeks is particularly hard. You know best what she likes and doesn’t like, and can get this ready so she can nourish herself and baby.

06

Be the (friendly) gatekeeper

Decide together who visits, for how long, and what they bring. Then be the one who gently says goodbye so she doesn't have to.

And the part nobody asks you about.

Your identity changed too. There're just fewer spaces to talk about it.

You were back at work in two weeks and that makes you feel guilty, FOMO and mildly relieved.

There are things you physically cannot do, and it is hard to feel useful.

The classes, the books, and the groups are all written for her.

She’s overwhelmed and less patient. You’re trying to be gracious, but it’s all adding up.

None of that makes you a bad partner. It makes you a person going through something enormous with no script for it, in a system that has not thought about you.

Ask the questions you do not want to ask her

You get a private conversation with Nell. What is normal, what is worrying, what would actually help this week. Nell knows what has been logged, so the answers are about your family rather than a search result.

Nothing you say there is shared with her

Get invited. Then be useful.

She sets up Fourth Health and invites you. From there you can see what is happening, log what you did, and ask what she needs without asking her.
